Chondrodite mineral specimens from Afghanistan
Chondrodite is not a rare mineral but it is uncommon in fine crystals. The
chondrodite crystals from Tilly Foster Mine in New York State are classics.
These fine crystals from Afghanistan are very collectible examples of a
mineral not often available in such quality.
Note: This occurence has been subsequently identified as clinohumite. Both
clinohumite and chondrodite are monoclinic members of the humite group.
Humite group minerals consist of alternating silicate and oxide layers, with
the silicate layers having an olivine structure and the oxide layers having
a brucite structure. Chondrodite, magnesium iron silicate fluoride hydroxide,
has two stacked olivine layers between each brucite layer, while clinohumite,
magnesium silicate fluoride hydroxide, has four stacked olivine layers between
each brucite layer. Both are very similar materials indicative of metamorphic
environments.
