Glorieta Mtn pallasite, Santa Fe Co., NM, USA

   MM006

   GLORIETA MOUNTAIN

   PALLASITE

Santa Fe County, New Mexico, USA

A slice of stony-iron meteorite showing

olivine crystal sections imbedded in a

nickel-iron matrix. The metal in this pallasite

has an unusual elemental composition for

    pallasites.

(Please disregard the reflections in the iron)

   Specimen size: approx. 9.1 cm  X  8.5 cm  X  0.2 cm        Weight: 70.5 grams

Caple York octahedrite, Greenland

   MM007

   CAPE YORK OCTAHEDRITE

   West Greenland

This slice is from one of several iron meteor-

ites from Melville Bay, Greenland. It shows

a typical Widmanstätten pattern and troilite

(iron sulfide) inclusions. Used as a source of

iron for tools by the local Inuit people, the

    meteorites were rediscovered by Robert

Peary and transported to New York after much effort.

    Specimen size: approx. 13.6 cm  X  7.8 cm  X  0.3 cm        Weight: 277.5 grams

Portales Valley metal rich chonfrite, Roosevelt Co., NM, USA

   MM008

   PORTALES VALLEY METAL

   RICH CHONDRITE

   Roosevelt County, New Mexico,

   USA

A slice of the very unusual Portales Valley

chondrite. The mixture of stone and metal

has some very unique features which offer

conflicting evidence as to the origin of this stone.

   Specimen size: approx. 9 cm  X  6.5 cm  X  0.6 cm        Weight: 108.5 grams

Estherville mesosiderite, Emmet Co., IA, USA

    MM009

    ESTHERVILLE MESOSIDERITE

   Emmet County, Iowa, USA

A slice of the brecciated silicate and iron

     Estherville mesosiderite.

    Specimen size: approx. 11.8 cm  X  9.1 cm  X  0.6 cm        Weight: 173.5 grams

Tucson Ring, Tucson, AZ, USA

   MM010

   TUCSON RING ATAXITE

   Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA

This small slice is from a large ring-shaped

meteorite first discovered in Sonora, Mexico

by Jesuit missionaries. The meteorite was left

near Tucson while being transported to Spain.

It was taken to Tucson, where it was used as

a public anvil until it was claimed and donated

to the Smithsonian. This is an example of a

rare variety of iron meteorite consisting almost entirely of taenite, a solid solution of iron and nickel rich in iron.

    Specimen size: approx. 3.5 cm  X  1.2 cm  X  0.2 cm        Weight: 5 grams
